Beng Mealea

Beng Mealea is the ultimate adventure temple. Located 70 kilometers east of the main Angkor complex, this vast 12th-century temple has been left almost entirely to the jungle, creating a hauntingly beautiful landscape of collapsed galleries, towering trees, and moss-covered ruins. Built around the same time as Angkor Wat and following an almost identical floor plan, Beng Mealea offers a unique perspective on what the great temples may have looked like before extensive restoration efforts. The temple covers a massive area — its outer enclosure measures nearly a kilometer on each side — and much of it remains unexplored even by archaeologists. Walking through Beng Mealea is an adventure. Wooden walkways and bridges navigate over collapsed sections, but the real magic comes from climbing over the jumbled stone blocks, peering into dark corridors where roots have pushed through the ceiling, and discovering carved lintels and pediments half-buried in the debris. The experience is raw and authentic in a way that the restored main temples cannot replicate. The temple receives a fraction of the visitors that the main Angkor temples see, and on many mornings you may have entire sections to yourself. The silence, broken only by birdsong and the rustle of wind through the canopy, adds to the profound sense of discovery. Beng Mealea does not require an Angkor Pass — it has a separate entrance fee, making it accessible even if you have not purchased the main temple ticket.
